Thursday, June 11th, 2009 06:00:00 WHAT do 46-year-old Chandy Samuel, a former commercial director of a bank, and Diana Chee, 25, a part- time travel salesperson have in common? They are both ordinary consumers who decided to fight for their rights, all the way to the courts. Chee won a landmark decision when the Kuala Lumpur High Court declared that the terms and conditions of Citibank's credit cards that allowed it to charge the cardholder more than RM250 in cases where the card was stolen was illegal. |

Friday, June 12th, 2009 06:20:00 THERE are some things money can't buy. For everything else...well, there is the credit card. Not too long ago, only a privileged few were accorded the luxury of buying things for "free". That has changed over the years as practically everyone these days owns a credit card. All it takes is for one to be above 21 and earn an annual income of RM18,000. |

THE temptation to spend beyond our means has never been greater. Everywhere a young person turns is an advertisement or a booth in a mall calling out to him or her to spend money, to take a loan, to invest in the future and to look like they have it all. While previous generations accumulated what they had over time, we are told today we can have it all, that we can have it all now. |

Solar power is not the way to go |
|

Friday, 26 June 2009 08:42 |
Friday June 26, 2009 I REFER to “Go for solar power, not nuclear energy” (The Star, June 25), in which Dr Ahmad Shadzli, director of GREEN of Bangi, questioned whether TNB has made any detailed study on the viability of solar energy.
Let’s take the case of the Nevada Solar One in the United States, which is one of the largest solar power plants in the world. It has a nominal capacity of 64 megawatts (MW). However, as in all solar power systems, that rated capacity is deceptive. By late evening as the sun goes down, the electricity production drops to zero. |
