KUALA LUMPUR: Basic foodstuffs like rice and fresh vegetables and part of utilities such as water and electricity will be exempted from the proposed goods and services tax (GST).
They are part of some 40 basic goods and services that will be free from GST, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah said when opening a one-day national conference on the GST in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

RECENTLY, I received e-mails from different "banks" asking me to update my personal details, to reactivate my online banking account, to participate in a survey for which I would get a RM200 reward, or to use my bank account for money transactions for which I would be paid a certain sum.
Answering these emails would require me to key in personal details such as my online banking account user name and password. I realised this was an attempt to "phish" away my money.

TELUK INTAN: The Government will monitor the No Plastic Bag Day’s effectiveness in Penang and Selangor before deciding if it should be implemented nationwide.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said his ministry would monitor the on-going campaign to reduce the usage of plastic bags at departmental stores, hypermarkets, mini-markets and other shops in the two states.

To curb the childhood-obesity epidemic, health experts have long urged parents to make healthy changes to their family's lifestyle — such as eating nutritiously, reducing TV time, exercising and getting a good night's sleep.

Individually, these behaviors have been linked to a lower risk of obesity in kids, but researchers at Ohio State University were interested in learning whether their effect might be cumulative — that is, whether families who adopted not just one but two or more of these behaviors could reduce their children's risk of obesity even further.

Ralph Nader faults safety agency in Toyota recall PDF Print E-mail

LOS ANGELES, Feb 4 — Pioneering consumer advocate Ralph Nader says the US government’s auto-safety watchdog coddled Toyota in dealing with problems leading to a worldwide vehicle recall, and he urged President Barack Obama to strengthen the agency.

Nader, who gained prominence in the 1960s as author of the scathing auto industry expose “Unsafe at Any Speed,” said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, failed to hold Toyota Motor Corp’s feet to the fire.
